Walk Our Children to School Day promotes safety education and awareness for the benefit of students who walk and bicycle to school every day. The international program increases the awareness of safe walking/bicycling skills, safe routes to school, as well as walking as an exercise that promotes good health and physical fitness. In addition, walking and bicycling help the environment by reducing school-related traffic and pollution and reinforces the importance of reducing traffic speed and obeying the school speed zone limits. In conjunction with this event, Vice Chair Perla Tabares Hantman also encourages participation in the “WalkSafe Program” at the elementary school level. This program was developed by the University of Miami/Miller School of Medicine to teach safe walking skills.
The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the MPO Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee have endorsed “Walk Our Children to School Day,” which is sponsored by the National SAFE KIDS Coalition, under the local leadership of Miami Children’s Hospital.
