For the past nineteen years, School Board Member Perla Tabares Hantman has sponsored the endorsement of International “Walk to School Day”, as part of her on-going safety initiatives. The celebrations were held at Mami Lakes K-8 Center on Tuesday, October 4, 2016.
This initiative promotes pedestrian safety education and awareness for the benefit of students who walk to school every day. The international program increases the awareness of safe walking skills, safe routes to schools, as well as walking as an exercise. In addition, walking helps the environment by reducing school-related traffic and pollution and reinforces the importance of reducing traffic speed and obeying the school speed zone limits. In conjunction with this event, School Board Chair Tabares Hantman also encourages participation in the “WalkSafe Program” at the elementary school level. This program was developed by the University of Miami/Miller School of Medicine to teach safe walking skills.
The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and the Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee have endorsed International “Walk to School Day,” which is sponsored by the National SAFE KIDS Coalition.
