For the past four years, Chair Perla Tabares Hantman has sponsored the endorsement of National Teen Driver Safety Week, as part of her on-going safety initiatives. This year, the event will run from October 16 to October 22, 2011, and will focus on the dangers of districted driving.
During this week, the winning Public Service Announcements and Posters that were developed by senior high school students during the 2011 Senior High School Student Safety Campaign contest will be reproduced and distributed at all District senior high school campuses. Funding for this initiative will be provided by the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The Florida Department of Transportation and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority are also partnering with the District to promote this event.
National Teen Driver Safety Week provides an opportunity for parents, young drivers, lawmakers and educators to work together to change risky driving behaviors and help save lives in our communities.
To help further promote teen drive safety and discourage cell phone use while driving, on September 7, 2011, Ms. Hantman announced that the District will be participating in the "Put it Down" Campaign, sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation and related efforts promote by the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX) in "The Last Word" Campaign.
