For the past several years, Chair Perla Tabares Hantman has sponsored the endorsement of National Teen Driver Safety Week, as part of her on-going safety initiatives. This year, the event will run from October 20 – 26, and will focus on the dangers of districted driving. National Teen Driver Safety Week provides an opportunity for parents, young drivers, lawmakers and educators to work together to change risky driving behaviors and help save lives in our communities. Our efforts have proven successful as evidenced by the passage of Florida Law that prohibits texting while driving, effective October 1, 2013.
During the safety week, the winning Public Service Announcements and Posters developed by senior high school students during the 2013 District-wide safety contest will be reproduced and distributed at all senior high school campuses.
In addition, to help further promote teen driver safety and discourage cell phone use while driving, on September 3, 2013, Ms. Hantman announced that the District will once again participate in the "Put it Down" Campaign, sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation.
