2012 M-DCPS Student Safety Campaign

As part of School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman’s long-standing safety initiatives, the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), in collaboration with the Public School Community Traffic Safety Team (CTST), and the Miami-Dade Expressway Authority (MDX), is coordinating the "2012 M-DCPS Student Safety Campaign".  This year, our safety initiative has been expanded to reach a larger audience of students, including the elementary and middle school students.

M-DCPS students will have the opportunity to participate in the following contests and/or programs:

  • Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Poster Contest (grades 9 - 12)
  • Pledge Rally Contest (grades 9 - 12)
  • Bumper Sticker Safety Contest (grades 5 - 8)
  • Trucks and Tools Program (grades K - 4)

Below you will find more information about each contest, as well as contest applications. We encourage all M-DCPS students to participate in the 2012 M-DCPS Student Safety Campaign. Your efforts will make this campaign a true success!


Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Poster Contest (grades 9 - 12):

The 2012 Annual Senior High School Student Safety Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Poster Contest is open to all senior high schools.  The contest now in its 4th year encourages and promotes pedestrian and vehicular safety at the senior high school level.  Similar to last year, the contest will focus on the dangers of distracted driving, with heightened emphasis on texting while driving. PSAs and posters will be judged by the CTST members.

  • The contest period runs from January 2012 through March 2012. 
  • Winners will be announced at the May 2012 School Board and MPO Board meetings. 
  • Winning submittals will be highlighted during the 2012 National Teen Driver Safety Week, the third week of October.
  • Winners will receive cash prizes in each category. First place: estimated award $250 (one PSA and one poster). Second place: estimated award $150 (one PSA and one poster). Third place: estimated award $100 (one PSA and one poster).

PSA and Poster Constest - WSVN, Channel 7 Partnership through MDX: 

Through an existing relationship/agreement with WSVN Channel 7, MDX will further promote the 2012 Public Service Announcement (PSA) and Poster Contest by donating a total of $5,000 to the school (s) where the winning students attend ($2,500 for school where the Poster winner attends/$2,500 for the school where the PSA winner attends). Once the first place winner in each category is chosen by the CTST, WSVN will:

  • Air the video on TV
  • Include the video on the WSVN website
  • Feature the winning video and poster as a story
  • Make a total donation of $2,500 to the winning school(s)

PSA and Poster Deadline Information:

  • Contest applications must be submitted via fax to 305-995-4760, or emailed to Vvillaamil @dadeschools.net, by 5:00 PM, March 5, 2012.
  • PSAs and Posters must be submitted by 5:00 PM, April 11, 2012 and clearly indicate the student’s name/phone number. Also the PSA must have a title, be in DVD format and  must include school name.

Pledge Rally Contest (grades 9 - 12)

Senior High School students will also have the opportunity to participate in "Pledge to Not Text and Drive Rallies" at high schools throughout the District. The rallies will take place during the October 2012 Teen Driver Safety Week, and include a contest for the most number of pledge cards collected. School Board members will be encouraged to "adopt" a school within their respective Districts to host a rally. Prize to be awarded to the school that submits the most pledges. Prize will be awarded to the winning school's Athletic Activities Department.

Pledge Rally Contest applications will be administered by the host school.

Bumper Sticker Safety Contest (grades 5 - 8): 

The Bumper Sticker Safety Program is intended to increase student awareness of distracted driving even before they are drivers themselves is key to instilling safe behavior of our future drivers. This program invites students from grades 5th through 8th to participate in the design of a safe-driving bumper sticker. Bumper stickers will be judged by MDX Board Members. The three top designs will be recognized during the October 2012 Teen Driver Safety Week. The first place design will be printed and distributed throughout the County. The top 10 designs will be displayed at MDX headquarters.

Bumper Sticker Safety Contest Deadline Information:

Bumper Sticker Safety Contest applications must be submitted via fax to 305-995-4760, or emailed to Vvillaamil@dadeschools.net, by 5:00 PM, March 5, 2012.

Trucks and Tools Program (grades K - 4):

At the elementary school level (Kindergarten to 4th grade), MDX is promoting its Trucks and Tools Program.  Students will have the opportunity to see a Road Ranger Truck and receive a presentation from a uniformed Road Ranger. MDX will provide all participating students with a mini tool kit, an Honorary Road Ranger Sticker and a Road Ranger Care Card.
