The students of the Miami Lakes Middle School Project Citizen Class developed an award winning safety program entitled “Saving Pedestrians Everywhere Every Day” (SPEED), which focuses on saving the lives of children through education, expanding school speed safety zones, and speed enforcement. In May 2009, the School Board approved Resolution No. 09-74, endorsing the SPEED program.
In September 2009, the School Board approved Resolution No. 09-103, recognizing the Miami Lakes Middle School Project Citizen Class for achieving a Superior Award for their safety program SPEED at the 2009 Project Citizen National Showcase, which is a portfolio-based civic education program that promotes participation in state and local government by teaching students the public policy process. The program encourages civic involvement and support for democratic values and principles and in funded by the U.S. Department of Education under the Education for Democracy Act approved by the U.S. Congress.
