For the past three years, the Miami-Dade County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) has partnered with the School District to promote pedestrian and vehicle driver safety at the senior high school level.  Similar to last year, by co-sponsoring a Senior High School Safety Campaign Contest, the theme focused on the dangers of distracted driving.

The contest included a poster and public service announcement component, with three winners designated for each category. In an effort to maximize student participation, District staff secured a donation from Rick Case Automotive Group, in the amount of $900, to provide monetary awards for three winners in each category.

A total of 107 students participated throughout the School District submitted applications from: Ronald W. Reagan/Doral Senior High, Miami Senior High, Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior, William H. Turner Technical Art High School, Hialeah Senior High, and Young Men’s Academy for Academic and Civic Development at Macarthur South.

School Board Chairman Perla Tabares Hantman recognized the winners for their creativity and ingenuity at the May 2011 School Board and MPO Meetings. In addition, the safety messages will be distributed to all District senior high schools during the annual National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 16-22, 2011. The safety messages will also be broadcast on WLRN after the regularly scheduled School Board meetings during the months of May, June and July.
