On October 13, 2010, School Board Chairman Perla Tabares Hantman proffered agenda item H-8 seeking the Board’s endorsement of the "NBC Miami Homeroom Reformers Student Essay Contest". The contest was sponsored by the NBC News Education Initiative and offered an opportunity for students over the age 13, who live in South Florida, to submit innovative, creative and compelling ideas to address education reform in their schools. The winning essay would win $5,000 for school improvements.
On March 9, 2011, School Board Chairman Tabares Hantman announced and congratulated the winner of the Homeroom Reformers Student Essay Contest: Michael Orr from Here’s Help, a Miami-Dade County Public Schools Educational Alternative Outreach Program. Mr. Orr wishes to reform the school by retrofitting his homeroom with new desks, air conditioning and computers with high speed internet access. He is an example for current and future students from Here’s Help, who are looking for a second chance to succeed.
Congratulations to the winner and all the students who participated in this contest!
