Throughout the years, Vice Chairman Perla Tabares Hantman has sponsored numerous student pedestrian safety initiatives. In April 2008, she proffered a Board item seeking endorsement of a Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Highway Safety Grant program to fund a Speed Reduction Pilot Program (Program) targeting senior high schools. After a highly competitive process, FDOT has awarded $105,000 to implement the program for the 2009-2010 school year. The program would enhance the District’s on-going safety efforts through the use of solar-powered dynamic speed display signs at seven senior high schools across the District, with plans to include additional schools within the next few months.
In conjunction with the installation of the signs, the School Police Department will actively enforce speeding violation and aggressive driving incidents, as well as seatbelt violations by deploying the Aggressive Driving Unit to the seven senior high schools.
On December 10, 2009, Ms. Hantman hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at American Senior High School to officially launch the Program. Through the assistance of the Miami-Dade Public Works Department, the Program is now fully implemented at the following seven locations: Coral Gables; John A. Ferguson; Felix Varela; Dr. Michael M. Krop; American; G. Holmes Braddock; and Coral Reef Senior High Schools.
