On August 3, 2011, School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman endorsed the Hialeah Healthy Families Campaign, which is sponsored by the City of Hialeah, with the support of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida Foundation. The campaign is intended to address the causes of childhood obesity and promotes healthy eating and active living in the community.
This initiative began in 2010 through a coalition of community partners that worked together and developed “Call to Action” that targets the following:
- School involvement
- Parent engagement
- Social marketing/community outreach
The Call to Action builds on success stories, such as the Safe Routes to Schools Program (SRTS) and the annual Walk Our Children to School events. The Call to Action was unveiled to the public at the City’s Fourth of July Celebration and encourages the citizens to apply for mini-grants to implement programs that promote sustainable, healthy lifestyle changes in the Hialeah community.
