March 2011 promoted as "Florida Bike Month"

On February 9, 2011, School Board Chair, Perla Tabares Hantman proffered an agenda item for approval of Board Resolution No. 11-013, promoting March 2011 as Florida Bike Month.

This initiative is intended to promote the following:

  • Healthy lifestyle choices, which encourage physical fitness as well as helps reduce the chances of chronic illnesses and obesity;
  • Bicycle use has a positive effect on the environment because helps lower motor vehicle emissions and global warming;
  • Increase parking and existing road capacity when people choose to ride their bikes;
  • Bicycle use has helped increase eco-tourism and historical preservation in Florida through converting rail corridors to multi-use trails;
  • Bicycling contributes economic development in many communities; and
  • Miami-Dade County Public Schools champions programs and events that promote personal health and well being in addition to protecting the environment.
